MEETING WITH THE MAYOR

Image
The mayor spent an hour and 15 minutes with Pat, Jill and me. He opened by describing himself as more of an old-school conservative– fiscally conservative, small-government guy – but socially liberal. In all, it was a cordial meeting and a good conversation – Pat tells me it was far more productive than meetings with the previous mayor. I left feeling that the mayor did a good job of “handling” us, but I never felt that we were being showboated, talked down to or dismissed as a bunch of crazy progressives. I felt like he actually listened, and he spent time explaining his views. I don’t agree with all of them and I’m still a bit wary on the official explanation for term limits, but that’s where we are. On term limits : Ross said the rush to put this on the ballot was spurred by a “lot” of emails that came in this summer urging the council to do something about term limits and soon. He wouldn’t confirm the number of emails he and council members actually received (we’ve heard just 12 to

WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON...........

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON………… At the first of the year, several members of the PWA joined a group of activists who wanted to enroll many of the progressive groups in Arlington to create a coalition of groups in order to work together on many of the issues that we shared an interest in.   There were quite a few meetings and since Arlington had a May election coming up to fill vacant City Council members seats, those which were vacated as a result of Term Limits, it seemed that was an urgent topic. The Coalition for a Better Arlington was created and began to work to join other progressive groups in Arlington to work together to get more liberal leaning candidates to run for the vacated City Council positions and to run against the Mayor. Several members of the PWA worked very hard on the above project.   We had various events to raise money to support those candidates. One was a silent auction at J. Gilligans where the candidates spoke and great donated articles were auctioned

CATCHING UP!!!

PLAYING CATCH UP!!! This is me trying to keep all the "balls in the air".   So much has happened since my last blog that I decided I better just highlight them instead of writing a separate blog for each event we participated in.  After Term Limits passed we decided to hold a party to celebrate and acknowledge the work we all did to get it passed. It was a bipartisan effort. We especially wanted to thank Zack Maxwell who originally got this project  started.             Our Christmas party was next and we had great food and great conversations about all the work we did in 2018 and all the possibilities that were ahead of us.        We participated in our third Women's March in Ft. Worth, January 20, 2019! The weather was chilly but not bad and the turnout was good.  It was so uplifting to see the how committed women are to work and turn our country back to our citizens.    In February, we were invited to join a meeting with

The election is over and our Term Limits project WON!   Citizens of Arlington voted 63% YES to the 37% NO!   It was terribly exciting and we have been thrilled for the last two days. Of course, it won’t be implemented until the May 2019 city election when three long-term (15 to 17 years) city council people, must resign.   We will be looking for some good people to run to fill those spaces. So, contact us if you are interested. In 2020, two more must go. We do expect some "push back" as we have heard that the Mayor and the Council will be looking at some way to overturn Prop E, as it was called on the election ballot. We have even heard there maybe a lawsuit,  But, that probably is just a rumor. We will continue to follow and post the "happing's " as they show up. For now, it is a time to celebrate and rest.   But in the new year we will look forward to our next project which will be to get anti-corruption laws, gerrymandering voting districts, a

IMAGINE!!!!! We have set up a youtube channel for PWA's use in the future but right now we are using it to post our new video just done a couple of weeks ago.  It is ordinary citizens giving their thoughts on Proposition E Term Limits.  I think it proves that they are not a bunch of "extremists" as the Mayor and Council have called them. Check it out at:  https://youtu.be/12G9TQKLmSE A lot of money is being spent for $200 a month jobs!?!?!?! Wonder why?!?!?!

HOW COULD THIS BE?!?! After having a judge uphold our Proposition for Term Limits and it being placed on the ballot for November 6th, the Mayor and Council and a PAC called "We love Arlington Texas" kicked in $400,000 dollars to blanket the city with information to Vote NO on the Term Limits.  They also filed a counter lawsuit claiming 146 resolutions that we did which makes the Proposition E unlawful.  Several of these resolutions want us to turn over all the names and all information of volunteers who helped collect the citizens signatures (that's one) and any volunteers who said anything derogatory about the Mayor or Council when we were collection signatures (another resolution). This includes addresses, phone numbers, current and previous employers etc. They say citizens did not know what they were signing.  Of course, they don't mention that on the top of each and every page was the entire proposition language! It seems in this age, individual people are n
