WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON...........
WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON…………
At the first of the year, several members of the PWA joined
a group of activists who wanted to enroll many of the progressive groups in
Arlington to create a coalition of groups in order to work together on many of
the issues that we shared an interest in.
There were quite a few meetings and since Arlington had a May election
coming up to fill vacant City Council members seats, those which were vacated
as a result of Term Limits, it seemed that was an urgent topic.
The Coalition for a Better Arlington was created and began
to work to join other progressive groups in Arlington to work together to get
more liberal leaning candidates to run for the vacated City Council positions
and to run against the Mayor.
Several members of the PWA worked very hard on the above
project. We had various events to raise
money to support those candidates. One was a silent auction at J. Gilligans
where the candidates spoke and great donated articles were auctioned off. Our
candidates were Marvin Sutton for District 3, Barbara Odem Wesley for at large,
Celia Morgan for District 5, and Ruby Woolridge for Mayor.
An online newspaper, The Tarrant Chronicle, was begun by
members of the CBA, including PWA members, and continues to publish articles
supporting Arlington and Tarrant County in being aware of the local issues
coming up. PWA has since moved on to other projects.
We continue to write postcards and make phone calls to our
local, state and national representatives.
We not only inform them of our views but take the time to thank them when
they embrace what we believe to be in the best interests of our country. We set
aside time in our monthly general meetings to write postcards on current issues.
Voter registration is always a number one project. We participate with other groups who are
committed to this endeavor at our colleges and other locations. We also set up events to enroll new voters on
our own.
Members attended the annual AFLCIO Labor Picnic at River
Legacy Park in Arlington. We set up a
table and did voter registration.
Members joined with Dallas groups this September in a rally
at Senator John Cornyn’s office to “Protect the Vote” in our state.
PWA members continue to be intensely interested in projects
that support Climate Reality. Since
recycling is a big part of what we can all do, members visited a large, state
of the art, recycling plant in Denton.
It was fascinating and informative and we will be visiting several
others in our North Texas area to see how we can support Arlington in bettering
our recycling efforts.
We were sponsors’ in creating the “Climate Strike” event in
Ft. Worth on September 20th and many members spent their time
informing others of ways that we can all help reduce the burden on our planet.
Locally, we attend City Council meetings every month to stay
abreast of current events and projects in our city. We are supporting a
conversation about “affordable housing”, air quality, and transportation
efforts to reduce our traffic congestion.
These are some of the things that the Progressive Women of
Arlington have engaged in so far this year.
And you can be assured that there are more in the works leading up to
the most important issue – the “2020 U. S Election”.
Come play with us and make
a “huge” difference that matters in our city, our state and our country’s well-being
for the future!
